What is the purpose of Senior Hospitality Institute?

Senior Hospitality Institute is a non-profit Illinois corporation based near Chicago, organized and operated exclusively for the purpose of educating seniors and the public about how to locate the most appropriate retirement facilities for their needs.

Our educational activities are related to the description found in IRS Publication 557, page 23:
"The instruction of the public on subjects useful to individuals and beneficial to the community."

For example, helping retirees and their families easily and quickly understand how to navigate among the thousands of confusing terms used in the retirement industry. The web site tool at Senior Hospitality Institute is one way to harness the power of the Hayward Retirement Classification System to locate the ideal retirement community. This system is the first objective system based on measurable criteria that can be used to select senior communities. The ability to do this quickly and easily is very useful to individuals and beneficial to the community.

We are preparing our application for 501(c)(3) status with the IRS so that we can qualify to offer tax-exempt donations, grants and other fund-raising contributions.

Is my donation tax-deductible?
If you wish to support our education efforts, we invite you to click on the donate button on the right. You will receive an email receipt for your donation. However, until we receive approval for tax-exempt status, your donation is not tax-deductible, but we will be notifying you when approval is granted, so hold on to your email receipt.

Are listing fees tax-exempt for communities?
At this time, communities are listed either for free (for a standard listing), or they pay fees for upgraded (expanded) listings. According to IRS rules, rate-chart fees paid by communities for upgraded listings do not qualify for tax deductions, because they are receiving services in return for the fees.
